Walk into any home store and you'll find garage floor epoxy kits for around $150, promising a showroom floor for a weekend's work. Then, a year later, you'll find a lot of those same floors peeling — especially where hot tires sit. Here's why DIY kits fail and what a lasting coating actually takes.
The number one reason coatings fail is inadequate surface preparation. DIY kits tell you to clean the concrete and apply an acid etch — but acid etching doesn't open the concrete surface enough to create a strong mechanical bond. Without that bond, the coating sits on top rather than gripping in, and it peels. Professionals instead diamond-grind or shot-blast the concrete, which profiles the surface so the coating bonds permanently.
The classic DIY failure is hot-tire pickup: warm tires from driving soften a poorly bonded coating and pull it up as they cool and grip. A thin, weakly bonded kit is defenseless against it. Properly prepped concrete and hot-tire-resistant systems don't have this problem.
Most kits are a single thin coat, which simply isn't durable. A professional floor is a multi-layer system — a penetrating base, a broadcast flake or metallic layer, and tough clear topcoats — built up to a thickness and durability a kit can't match.
